Almada, Portugal

Catarina Freitas,

Head of Environmental Planning Department, Municipality of Almada

" Almada is part of the Greater Lisbon area, located at the south bank of the river Tagus. With more than 8 millions visitors per year, mainly visiting its 13 km beachfront, sustainable mobility management is a key issue in our policies. An effort has been made to involve different departments in the municipality itself as well as local actors and entities with an influence in mobility management. Our priorities are ‘Policy & Integration’ (especially how to encourage everyone to cycle and use the future tramway, promoting modal transfer), ‘Clean Vehicles’ and ‘Travel Awareness’. We know that there is good practice elsewhere in Europe: the PIMMS benchmarking exercise will help us to identify where to find successful examples that can be adopted in Almada."

Our interest in PIMMS is to...

•  exchange experiences/best practices

•  learn from others experiences

•  contribute with our best practices

1. Main characteristics of the city/region

•  160,000 inhabitants

•  72 km2

•  8,000,000 visitors/year, mainly visiting local beachfront

•  Mainly urban, and located in the South of Lisbon

2. Main transport issues

•  High car use

•  High energy consumption from transports (~ 45%)

•  Not enough soft modes

•  Main N/S highway bisects the Municipality and is crossed by 160.000 commuter vehicles a day

•  Bus, boat and train network available (tram system under construction)

•  Public transport is a government competence

•  The Municipality manages traffic circulation and can promote awareness campaigns

3. Mobility management domains of special interest
